Matt Mullican is best known for his exploration of the subjective experience through the intersection of communal signage with personal semiotics. In order to produce these characteristically abstract, geometric forms, Mullican utilizes a combination of separate media including drawing, painting, sculpture, and more recently video, electronic media and installation. This is evident in Real Deal Cartoon Character, a comic strip silkscreen glued to paper, which conveys both his sense of visual language as well as a unique use of material.

Mullican attended the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA in 1974, and currently exhibits extensively all over the world in museums and galleries.
